Primus Expedition Stoves and Service – Built to last and withstand the elements

Thanks to their rugged construction and exceptional reliability, the Primus Expedition stoves have become a go-to choice for adventurers, explorers, and outdoor enthusiasts worldwide. We sat down with Operations Manager Erik Wiren to talk about the Expedition series and also the Primus Expedition Service.

When discussing the Primus Expedition Series , we actually have to start with a journey through time. That’s because the history of those products goes back to the 19th century – a time in which adventures were often more hazardous than they are today. During that time, the world was largely unexplored, and many remote regions were inaccessible due to rugged terrain, hostile weather, and dangerous wildlife. The lack of modern technology and infrastructure also made travel and communication more difficult, and medical care was often rudimentary or non-existent.

“That’s why it was such a breakthrough when F.W. Lindqvist and J.V. Svenson created the world’s first soot-free kerosene stove in 1892 – the birth of Primus,” Erik Wiren says and refers to adventures like Roald Amundsen’s South Pole exploration in 1911 or Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary’s first ascent of Mount Everest in 1953 that would have not possible without that technology.

First launched in 1996, the Expedition series now consists of four different stoves:

Multifuel Stove: The Multifuel Stove is a snow-melting, water-boiling multi-fuel stove when simplicity and reliability are paramount.

Omnifuel Stove: The Omnifiuel Stove is a stove with precise flame control, extremely high heat output, a Fuel Bottle and a super pouch to provide a complete kit for your travels.

Omnilite Stove Ti: The Omnifuel Stove Ti is an ultra-light, titanium, multi-fuel stove that has incredible flame control and uses multiple fuel options to cook anywhere in the world.

Ulti Stove System: In 2024 we will launch the Ulti Stove System which will be the most wind-resistant and powerful cooking solution we’ve ever made. An all-in-one system that runs on gas and offers the most reliable cooking solution for expedition chefs worldwide.

Versatility meets reliability – and maintenance-friendliness

According to Wiren, several advantages make Expedition Stoves such a suitable option for a wide range of adventures compared to other products on the market. “One of the key features of the Expedition stoves is their versatility. Additionally, the stoves are all easy-to-use and also very robust and reliable. The latter is crucial when you’re off-the-grid in extreme conditions,” headds.

Another essential feature of the Expedition stoves is their maintenance-friendliness. “They are constructed in a way that all parts are easily accessible,” Wiren says. “That means that you can easily fix them if a problem appears. A critical factor when you are traveling in a remote location where you can’t just buy a spare part at the nearest shop,” he explains.

For this reason, Primus offers special service kits for its Expedition stoves: These contain not only the most important spare parts of a stove – such as o-rings or valves – but also a multi-tool with which you can easily disassemble a cooker and replace the damaged parts just as easily.

The Primus Expedition Service

To make life even easier for adventurers, Primus has also launched the Expedition Service. This is an offer where, in addition to the consumer's legal rights, Primus also covers damage caused by use – a worldwide service that comes into effect, especially when it is not possible to buy spare parts due to the lack of infrastructure. “In the unlikely event your expedition stove should fail under use due to defects in materials or workmanship, we will do our best to help you out by sending you spare parts, repairing it or replacing it,” Wiren explains.

The Primus Expedition Service is thus a perfect complement to the Expedition Stoves, which have been helping adventurers all over the world reach their goals for many years – even in the most extreme conditions. At the end of our conversation, Wiren adds: “The idea behind the Expedition series and the Expedition Service is that an explorer shouldn’t have to think about her or his stove – only about the expedition itself.”
